For now have a look on the movie prepared by our master Karol K..

And don't pay too much attention to our "language". Sometimes it was too hard even for us heroes...

Today at night...tomorrow in the morning...

4.00 am...for some if us is the middle of the night...for the others already the morning...
So the next 4 am...is our starting time of great trip, unforgettable experience and the point from which our great Odyssey will start!
We are ready! Bags are packed and our friend James, jeep driver, most probably is collecting them from our place right now!
Bikes ready to go with some service needs to be done with my chain and Frenchie's tyres...
always sth that left for the last moment!

And what about us?

Karol started shooting a movie yesterday asking every single person for few words! I guess he will get Oscar for these few minutes of documentary that he is going to prepare. Jacek went for the last shopping so now he is ready ready. Tom got a huuuuuge bag of common medicines which made him our medical service point. James and Karita made a research on our road one more time which allowed us to made some small changes in the plan of the trip. Frenchie as always easy-going and left everything for the last moment. Rouf started to have a feeling that there is sth wrong with his bike but I guess its only the excitement result and everything is ok. (After that I had the same about mine as is the weakest one in a team and last night I have a dream that I found it broken down in a pieces...-lets hope its a good sign). And me? I got a horrible headache in the morning, worse than after drinking night...so a strong pain killer and I hope I will surrvive my last day in the office before 11 days of holiday!
Are we scared? I don't think so! It is more about the feeling that all we know it is serious trip and serious piece of cake to eat...so once we are back...we will it the cherry from the top of it!
Keep your fingers crossed and be prepared for a detailed report once we are back!

Bad news...from Kashmir

5 days to start our trip and we are attacking from all the resources around that situation in Kashmir is not so good. Two girls were killed by security forces and there is strike all over the places against that (http://www.tribuneindia.com/2009/20090604/main3.htm)

Everything seems to be closed. Hotels, shops and roads...as well what is actually the most important for us! So kind of messy situation which makes us very sad:(
Anyway we decided no to book any hotel after Leh and we will be controlling the situation every day. If nothing change we will be forced to take the same road back via Manali which would be very disappointing for us as the plan was to see Kashmir and Srinagar and add to the trip some touristic flavour:(
Let's see what the following days will bring...and you guys keep the fingers crossed for us!

And we?
Almost ready to go...we still need to arrange some small things. Buy some medicines and last spare parts. Everybody except again me and Tom are in perfect shapes for the trip. Tom had a small accident last Tuesday, braking while taking a turn. Me...I crashed yesterday only - braking while taking a turn because of some random guy who just appeared in front of me...
Beginners mistake... Nothing serious has happened to us apart some scratches and bruises...
what to do? Bikers risk!
For Saturday we will be fresh&funky for sure!

12 days to go...

"The land is so barren
and the passes so high
that only our fiercest enemies
or our best friends
would want to visit us"

(Ladakhi saying)

In 2 weeks from today we will be riding somewhere between Manali and Jispa! The departure day is coming so we are getting ready...

Last news!
Aurelien from France is joining us for sure...and most probably amazingly crazy rider Amal - this still needs to be confirmed as he is famous of joining any kind of events/trips/parties in the very last moment and we are ready for that.
That will enlarge our group up to 9 ppl confirmed with extra Amal!

We started collecting staff: jackets, bike shoes, sleeping bags, spare parts and making a list of what more do we need?

Karol came up with an idea of making our trip a little bit public in Poland and we started contacting some Polish media and some local one from Wroclaw to encourage them to become our media support. Like this our mums, dads and friends could see that on tv or listen about it in radio. Lets see what we can do as in this moment we are running out of time...cause for these things its still a little bit late. Anyway still we are planning to shoot a docummentary video so maybe after that somebody could use it! If not famous media still our children or grand children and with no doubts it will unforgetable memory for all of us...

Bike updates:
Tom and Karol got serviced their bikes...now the sound of Tom's Enfield is so amazing that everybody is ashamed of riding next to him! ;p
My Yamaha got fixed the battery. Piston is working pretty good so the engine... there are still some small things that have to be repaired but after service is running pretty smooth. Rouf has changed the shockers in his Avenger he bought 2 weeks ago... We are still concerned about Jacek's Enfield that used to be Balis...but still he has some time to fix everything that needs to be fixed. Hope not so many things...

First meeting of the Dream Team...

Yesterday, me, Karol, Rouf, Karita and James met at our place to discuss the first and final plan all together. After few hours of discussion on the maps and guides we managed to set up the plan. But as we all know the trip is kind of adventurous so everything can happen and everything can change on the way and we ARE ready for that!!!

We've decided to take the following route:

Day 1:
Delhi - Bilaspur (approx 350 km, mostly highway)

Day 2:
Bilaspur - Manali (approx 180 km, mostly mountain road)

Day 3:
Manali - Jispa (alt 3350, 141 km, really bad mountain road)

Day 4:
Jispa - Leh (alt 3505, 328 km)

We will have two pit-stops: Pang (alt 4500, 167km & Upshi alt 3384, 264km ). If we decide we're unable to reach Leh on the same day, we'll stay overnight in one of the camps. However, because of high altitude (especially at Pang) we should aim at reaching Leh the same day.
Day 5 & Day 6:
Leh

Day 7:
Leh - Kargil (204 km)

Day 8:
Kargil - Srinagar (195 km)

Day 9:
Srinagar - Jammu (290 km)

Day 10 & Day 11:
Jammu - Delhi

"Dream Team" of confirmed participants for today:

1. James and Karita- car
2. Basia - bike
3. Rouf - bike
4. Karol + Pallavi - bike
5. Jacek - bike
6. Tom - bike

Which make a group of 8 ppl FOR SURE!!!

Gurgaon - Lansdowne (10-12.04.2009)

Another looooong weekend...(Easter Holiday)
Another destination...
Another bike trip...

This time the destination has been choosen by Amal. Few days before he sent a short msg to everybody...and without thinking a lot we decided to go. Then in the meantime the main initiator decided not to go...but as always he joined us in the last moment...eh Amal.
The plan was to leave on Friday morning. Very morning. Somehow from the big group of ppl only me and Tom were ready to leave on Friday but we still wanted to go. Yasmina has jumped on the back sit of Tom. Luckily there was another friend of Tom, Rajat, who first of all knew the way, second of all knew the way and third of all was Indian (could speak Hindi what was very crucial at certain point of our trip). The rest of the team: Javed, Balis and Amal with Serena supposed to join us the next day.

We left Gurgaon at around 5.30 am. We were heading for Delhi to pick up Rajat on the way and then...direction of Lansdowne. The road was pretty good even with a crazy traffic in Meerut (around 80 km after Delhi) we were still in a good moods and happy to be outside of lovely, sorry "lovely" Gurgaon.
Then after another 30 km sth has happened with a bike of Tom (what a surprise). The piston has been changed few days before but the engine started to make a strange noise. Fortunately the bike still could go so we decided to search for a mechanic. It was in the middle of some field, big nowhere...but still there were some ppl we, I mean Rajat could ask about the way. We turned back and we landed in Mawana. Somehow we managed to find Royal Enfield workshop. It turned out we have to stay there for some time as the oil was licking and the engine was making a strange noise and etc (I have no idea what was the exact problem). Anyway it took them more or less 6 hours to repair it as they had to go for a missing part to another city and etc. In the meantime we were doing there for a tourist attraction (not so many white ppl are visiting those cities) so we decided to go to do some sightseeing around.

2 meters of Tom jumped on the bike of Rajat and I took Yasmina. We found a nice temple close by with a nice place to eat.

Somehow the time passed but we were running with the time. With the speed of 40 km/h as the Tom had to safe his engine we managed to do another 80 km and reach Najibabad. We passed the city and then we found ourselves in the middle of the forest. We realised we are lost. As it was already dark after a short discussion the idea to spent a night in the closest hotel turned out to be the best option for us. We were tired. Hungry and we definitely needed a shower! So we asked locals and they brought us to a nice place.
Shower.
Food.
Beer.
We recovered and we were back to our senses!!
And here, in the hotel we met an interesting person. Chris, Canadian guy, who left his country 7 months before and decided to come and travel in India. He bought a Royal Enfield and was riding all over the country. Crazy and nice person. We invited him to join us in our room for a small talk and beer. We passed few hours talking about our Indian experience and biking in this crazy country. It was very cool evening.

We woke up the next morning and me and Tom had some issuse with our stomaches. Probably that was the chicken from the previous evening. If we were in Delhi I would call it "Dehli belly". Ha ha ha. It took us ages to get ready and to organize ourselves. We stopped in the closest pharmacy. We bought sth to surrvive the day and lets go!

The road to Lansdowne was amazing. I am glad we didn't ride at night like this we would miss all the views and countrysides. We could see the snowy top of the Himalayas and beautiful valleys. On the other hand it would be also kind of dangerous as the road was narrow and full of curves (if I can say so in English).

We reached our destionation at 2 p.m. 24 hours later we supposed to reach. As we knew it's the long weekend and we could have problems with finding accomodation we started searching for something. We were 4 ppl, the other 4 ppl were on the way...We were trapped. All the places were full and they didn't have a single room so there was no way to accomodate 8 ppl at all. We were still searching... and...at certain point, after 30 minutes we met the other group. That was amazing. We left Gurgaon exactly 24 hours before them and they reached the destination 30 minutes after us. Hm...what do to!

We were glad to see them anyway! We went for food and we were sharing our experience from the way here. Unfortunately we couldn't find the place to stay in Lansdowne so we were forced to go back to Kotdwara where we found a hotel very easily. That was not touristic place at all!
Again shower, food, beer and conversations:)
We decided to woke up in the morning very early to catch the sun rise in the mountains and do a morning ride. The only that woke up on time: me and Serena. So we decided to come back to our beds and wait for the rest. When they got up, it was around 7-8.00 we took our bikes and we rode around mountains again. The weather was very pleasant. Still not warm so our heads didn't get melted under helmets. We grab some tea and coffe and came back to the hotel to pick up the others to start going back to Gurgaon.

The way back home was smooth till Delhi border which personaly I hate. I guess not only me;p Going through Delhi it is like never ending story so you need to be patient, be patient, be patient... and on the way find a spot to have some ice-cream and gather more patience for the highway (Javed's way).

We were wasted...and happy! Maybe except poor Tom who after all this trip got a flat tyre in Gurgaon.

Sunday 10 May 2009

Gurgaon - the city of flat tyres...

If you wanna get a flat tyre... come to Gurgaon.
If you wanna get a flat tyre two times in two weeks... come where? To Gurgaon.

The issue with flat tyres is not only mine.

Tom got a flat tyre (after 600km trip but where? In Gurgaon).
Frenchie got a flat tyre.
Karol got a flat tyre - many times...
Me- two times in two weeks...what the...!

I started wondering if by any chance its not a part of the business. The guys that can repair a flat tyre are on every corner...and their business is running pretty good! And those nails, sharp things, pices of strange metal are everywhere.
Hm...is it only coincidence?
Then when you got a flat tyre somehow one really kind guy appears from nowhere to show you the place when you can fix it. And...we...poor owners of every kind of vechicles have no choice than using their services...as it happened yesterday to me...AGAIN!!!
On the other hand its good they are so close. Just imagine getting a flat tyre back to Europe. Or you have to fix it by yourself (in case of a woman nightmare), or going another "X" km to search for a petrol station...or waiting "X" hours for help service.

Be aware of expats... on the roads of India.

Indian road can be dangerous...we know!

Cows, rikshaws, crazy truck drivers driving the trucks in a crazy way and which can fall down upside down very easily but still nobody gives a (...)!!!, strange vehicles, bicycles or sth what looks like that, people coming from nowhere and...

besides that fact...we have group of expats! They came to India few years ago, some of them few months ago and decided to buy a bike for themselves.
Some of them had previous experience. Some of them have never touched the bike before in their lives and have decided that India is this place on the earth where you can take a risk and try... try not to kill yourself and try not to be killed - thats the gold rule here, in this crazy and amazing country! aha...and remember: check if your horn works before you start riding your bike!!!

Let me introduce the gang of expats with some local flavour which had huge influence on us... while getting bikes and riding skills:)

1. Me, Basia from Poland.
Blond. White. Never ever rode a bike before coming to India. I guess I have never even touched one. The only girl on a bike in the gang but still treated as a boy. No mercy for loosers;p I managed to get a compliment from my colleague from work: " You ride better than Indians in a traffic".

2. Frenchie, org. Aurelien form France
One of those experienced one. Surprised every time sth breaks down in his bike as he claims he has never gotten his bike serviced back to France. Rides in a crazy but still safe way. Doesn't care about the signs...and the group of ppl that he should follow...always going into his directions...

3. Javed, our local guru of all the staff connected with bikes and bike trips. Kind of specialist of everything. Always ready for a ride no matter what. Positive spirit in our group.

4. Balis, from Lithuania. Accident master. Every time he comes with new scratch, bruise, new story and of course his version of accident. He likes to pay attention of locals riding without t-shirt (I guess white color of his skin is not visible when he has his t-shirt on). As the others say: his helmet protects only from the shits of the birds falling from the sky but still looks cool (at least he thinks so). Unfortunately went back to Lithuania few days ago...but still his spirit is and will be with us!

5. Karol from Poland. Another beginner. Ok, used to be...beginner. Screams at ppl in Polish, as he says: they won't understand it anyway. He uses his motor to attract local beauties (it works!!!).

6. Amal, easy - going rider. Always joining the bike trips in the last moment but still joining. His easy and calm attitude alywas calm the atmosphare in every nervous situation. Beer provider in a group.

7. Tom, 2 meters mix of German-Czech:) Invite him for a bike trip if you wanna be sure you don't want to get bored. Attracts lots of "luck" but in different meaning. Flat tyres, broken enigines, small collisions with other members of the gang - that're his specialities.

8. Rouf, local seller or whatever you wanna buy and whatever he can find on the street (see pic). He has decided to join this gang for Leh trip and automaticly became the part of the crew. Good teacher of "how to change the position with your pillion while riding". I tried and I survived:)

9. Indian roads...itself!

Cup of tea at Rajahstan boarder 29.03.2009

Weekend.
We were bored.
There was a "Bye bye party for Jaime" as I remember on Saturday evening that we really enjoyed but then on Sunday morning me and Javed decided to go somewhere...as usual in those kind of situations with no plan at all. We left the party at around 4 am and went for a coffee to Cafe Coffee Day with Javed's friend and Balis which last days became our ritual. Then, at around 5.30 we decided to leave...we went to Delhi to pick up Javed's friend, Steve, who decided to take a small break from his family life.

That was cool and crazy! Cool because there was no traffic at all... crazy because I didn't sleep at night and that was my first test in the field.

We decided to go to Mc Donald's in Manesar, on the highway NH8 in direction of Jaipur. One of the best highway in India, but still full of tracks, strange vehicels, people and even cows!!!

We reached McD on time, we had breakfast and some time to relax.

And then we decided to go a little bit further, to cross Rajahstan boarder and have a tea in the first shop. Unfortunately that time we did not think about the sun. We did not expect it to be so strong as the morning was chilly and nice. Anyway on the way back sun has decided to show up...and started killing us.

My first kind of "serious" trip. Me as a biker. Me riding a bike. Anyway it was more about making me feeling comfortable on the highway and having a nice breakfast in Sunday morning in a good company...

Tuesday 5 May 2009

Tentative plan...of the trip to Himalayas!

We do we want to go to Leh?

Because this journey with no doubts is of the most adventurous journeys in the world. We will have a chance to cross a total of 7 different mountain passes with world’s three highest motorable passes. The views are amazing, feelings not comparable to anything in the world, risk very high and adrenaline...that will make your heart beating faster and faster.
More than that the things that can happen: crossing rivers, nalas, stuck in landslides for 48 hrs,
stuck in a snowstorm, hail storm, slush, loose gravel etc etc. as it happened to previous bikers taking this road!
That's why...we GO!

Here I come with the plan of the way we set up till now (mostly by Karol). Still open for changes and suggestions:

The way to Leh:
Delhi - Bilaspur
Bilaspur - Manali
Manali - Jispa
Jispa - Leh

The way back:
Leh - Kargil
Kargil - Srinagar
Srinagar -Jammu
Jammu-Delhi

Still need to collect more detials about distances and places to stay for a night.
The trip besides being exciting will have some "tourist flavour" as Karol said...
New updates are coming soon!

Leh here we come...

How did we decide to go to Leh by bike?
booh...I have no idea...it just came up to our minds... I heared about this trip from a friend of my friend which I have never seen in real life. He told me they were planning to go there in August and that I could join if I want. I was not so sure as I didn't know any of those guys... but then I said: Lets see. In the meantime, during our bike trips I started this topic with my friends...and what was surprising I managed to collected some enthusiastic ppl.
Then somehow, Karol and Jacek also decided to go. The problem was that they were planing to go in June and we in July! Anyway after few days of exchanging e-mails and discussions about advantages and disadvantages of choosen dates we decided to connect our teams and set up the date for the middle of June as a starting date!
We managed to collect a strong group of ppl with friend of Karol - James - who will drive a jeep which can be very very usefull for us bikers!!!

Till now we have strong group of 11 people with some not mentioned belowed tentative participants (friends of our friends and etc):

1. Karol - Polish owner of Royal Enfield with Pallavi as a pillion
2. Me, Basia - Polish, the only female biker in a team
3. Jacek - Polish, currently relaxing in Thailand
4. Tom - German-Czech 2m height guy, with kind of "special" luck with his bike
5. James and Karita as a jeep support:)
6. Rouf - the expert of Kashmir region and my personal support!
7. Mahaveer - Tom's friend and for sure our after that trip
8. Simar - Tom's friend and for sure our after that trip
9. Vikas - Tom's friend and for sure our after that trip

Gurgaon-Nahan-Gurgaon... 24-26.01.2009

That's how it started.
We organized our first big trip to Nahan in Himachal Pradesh. We left on Saturday early in the morning. The distance to cover was around 300 km.
That time I was a pillion of Javed but it was enough to start feeling the spirit of riding a bike. The firts group of bikers Javed with Me, Aurelien with Anca, Handique with Serena, Prashant with Ula. Due to some strange cases the other group joined us later: Amal with Natalia, Balis with Kasia and Gautam with Charmie.

4.30 in Gurgaon. Aurelien trying to put helmet on Anca's head.
Javed is checking if everything is ok.

On the way...

Finally in Nahan.

On the way to Renuka Lake.

Renuka Lake.

Javed's t-shirt.

Lovely spot for a cup of tea.
